ABSTRACT

This study unlike other studies carried out on Efik proverbs and semantic component of proverbs will be delving into the meaning and effect components of some used proverb in Efik language which is encompassed in the topic “pragmatic analysis of proverbs found in Efik language.” The motivation of this study was to determine the different types of proverbs found in the Efik language, their various functions, the contextual usage and interference with the cultural beliefs of the Efik people, the meaning of these proverbs and the effect on listeners. This research employed the J.L. Austin (1975) “Speech Act Theory” as its theoretical framework to analyze the meaning components of these proverbs in Efik language. Employing the qualitative method of data collection, interviews were conducted with native speakers of the language and also books were sourced to get viable data for this study. During the course of this research, the researcher discovered several functions of proverbs among the Efik people as its used to address societal issues, marriage, e.t.c As it is culturally fine tuning and fitting. The findings of this research indicate also that some of these proverbs use mild literary device to communicate their thoughts. The researcher concluded that syntactic and grammatical build of proverbs found in Efik language are complex. This is because as it’s constitute contextual and cultural meaning embedded in an utterly different lexical items.
