ABSTRACT This study is titled A sociolinguistics analysis of Edo swear words. The study is aimed at investigating the attitude of the Edo people and the use of swear words in Edo languages. The objectives includes investigating the different abusive terms employed by the Edo people in different situations, Also determining if there is a relationship between the use of swear words and the behaviour of the individual group. The study adopts Dell hymes ethnography of communication theory, proposed in (1962,1964) which lays the groundwork for understanding how ethnography of communication can be applied to analyze language use, including swear words. The methodology employed for data collection is a qualitative research, combining information from both primary and secondary sources. The findings of the study emphasized the swear words in Edo community is used by everyone but mostly by adults. Swear words are used for rectification and jesting and so on. Through this analysis, the project contributes to a deeper understanding of Edo language and their socio-cultural implication within Edo speech communities.
