ABSTRACT

The study focuses on a sociolinguistic analysis of the use of Nigerian Pidgin for interactions in Ibadan markets. The aim of the study is to examine a sociolinguistic analysis of the use of Nigerian Pidgin for interactions in Ibadan markets. Its specific objectives are to analyze the linguistic features and functions of Nigerian Pidgin in Ibadan market interactions, investigate the sociocultural dynamics and identity negotiations facilitated by Nigerian Pidgin within market settings, and assess the implications of Nigerian Pidgin usage for communication strategies and linguistic inclusivity in Ibadan markets. The data for this study was collected by carrying out an ethnographic observation, participant observation and structured interviews. The participants were between the ages of 50 - 65 years of age, and they comprises a man and a woman. The findings of the study revealed that linguistic features such as code-switching, borrowing, and phonological variations were observed, highlighting the adaptability and flexibility of Nigerian Pidgin in diverse communication contexts within the market, the Nigerian Pidgin serves as a bridge that fosters camaraderie and familiarity between market participants, transcending linguistic and cultural  differences, and lastly, Nigerian Pidgin enhances communication strategies by providing a common language that promotes effective interaction among individuals of varying linguistic backgrounds. Its usage promotes linguistic inclusivity by accommodating speakers who may not be proficient in Standard English, thereby fostering a more inclusive and accessible market space for all participants.
