ABSTRACT

The concept of sociolinguistics is essentially concerned with the relationship between language and society has over the years been in area of much concern in linguistics. However, this study seek to investigate the extent to which Ika proverbs are reflective of the Ika society. The Ika proverbs which constitute the data for this research is sourced from relevant Ika texts and also recorded conversations with competent native speakers of Ika language. The researcher employs the descriptive theoretical framework in the analysis of these data and the result show how far reaching the implication of Ika proverbs are in understanding of several aspects of the Ika society. These aspects include Ika culture, ideology, value, history and also the linguistic situation of Ika society. I found out that there is no aspect of language that is more reflective of the society like proverbs, in this sense that proverbs help to reflect one in the society. The users of proverbs are expected to use it the way it is and not to alternate the words to suit him or for ease and consequently, proverbs portrays the society as it is. In proverbs the words are fixed and borrowing is rare. In the sense that in Ika proverbs all the words in Ika are not borrowed. The implication is that Ika proverbs are useful for analyzing the peculiarities of Ika society.
