ABSTRACT

This research examines Address terms and how it is utilized in an openspace. How, they serve as an introductory element in most conversational contexts, of ering insights into the identities of the participants. This investigationconcentrates on examining the patterns and variations of address terms withinthe Nsukka community, a linguistic minority residing in certain regionsof Enugu State. The primary objectives of this study are to explore the diversetypes of address terms used in the Nsukka community and to understandthefactors that influence the selection of specific address terms in various social contexts. The research employs a descriptive survey research design withinaqualitative research framework. Data collection involves a combinationof primary and secondary sources. To accomplish the research goals, the studyadopts the Speech Act theory as its theoretical foundation. Within the Nsukkalanguage, the study presents and discusses various categories of address terms, such as those related to kinship, personal names, titles, and expressionsof af ection. The main focus of this investigation lies in elucidating howtheseaddress terms fulfill distinct functions in communication and contribute tothepreservation of the social fabric within the community. It's important tonotethat there is limited existing literature on this dialect, making this researchapioneering ef ort in this field.
