ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the sociolinguistic analysis of idiomatic expressions in the Edo language spoken in the Edo State of Nigeria. The study will primarily examine the social and cultural factors influencing the usage and interpretation of idioms within the Edo-speaking community. While the research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis, it acknowledges that the scope may be limited to the availability of idiomatic expressions and access to Edo language speakers. This research will use a qualitative research design to examine idiomatic expressions in the Edo language. The data collection process will involve gathering idiomatic expressions from various sources, such as interviews, natural conversations, and written materials. The analysis will be conducted using a sociolinguistic lens, taking into account the social and cultural factors that influence the use of these expressions. Participant observation and interviews with Edo language speakers will also be used to gain further insights. The collected data will undergo comprehensive analysis and interpretation to address the research questions of the study. The theoretical framework employed for the analysis is the Hymes SPEAKING model of the Ethnography of Communication framework. The findings from this study highlight the significance of idiomatic expressions in the Edo language. The analysis revealed that these expressions serve multiple purposes and are deeply rooted in the cultural and linguistic contexts of the Edo-speaking community. Idioms were found to be valuable tools for expressing emotions, transmitting cultural knowledge, establishing identity, facilitating effective communication, and creating a sense of humor in discourse. The application of the SPEAKING framework allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the meanings and functions of these idiomatic expressions, shedding light on their significance within the Edo cultural heritage.
