ABSTRACT
This study examines the iconic, indexical and symbolic signs in football photographs in football matches that take place within the University of Benin in order to analyze how these football photographs reinforce the cultural and contextual rudiment of the University of Benin community. The multimodal dataset utilised in this research, sourced from several naturally occurring football scenes captured by the researcher and responses from participants of an interview conducted, were subjected to a content and critical analysis. Eventually, this study discovers that iconic, indexical and symbolic signs in the photographs of football matches in the University of Benin reveal meanings and symbols that resonate with the cultural and contextual factors of unity, identity and a sense of pride, specific to the University of Benin community. The research discovers that viewing football photographs evokes various emotions such as nostalgia, pride, joy, and connection. Within the University of Benin, they serve as a source of inspiration and a testament to the significance of the University of Benin as a platform for personal growth and achievements. Thus research therefore concludes that football photographs serve as powerful communicators of cultural narratives and emotions.
