ABSTRACT
This study set out to examine the semantics and contextual meaning of Igbo proverbs in Isi Akwu Dara N'ala. It sought to answer three key questions, namely: In what context are the proverbs used? How does relevance theory account for how the hearer understands the proverbs? The objective of the study is by reading the text over and over again to be able to ascertain the proverbs conveyed in the lsi Akwu Dara N'ala', series of proverbs were collected and were later classified into categories. These were finally subjected to a theoretic analysis. Using purposively sampled proverbs from Tony Ubesie’s two novels which focus on the Nigerian- Biafran war of 1967 –1970: namely Isi Akwu Dara N’ala, the objective show that the proverbs undergo functions of proverbs in Isi Akwu Dara N'ala, the role of context in arriving at the meaning of proverbs in Isi akwu Dara N'ala, and also the contextual meaning of selected proverbs in Isi Akwu Dara N'ala. The functions include advising, warning, inciting, criticizing and harmonizing for peace.
