AbstractThis study entailed a semantic analysis of the metaphorical usage of Ẹdo verb phrases. The metaphorical usage of verb phrases is a universal phenomenon though it might manifest itself in different forms across different languages of the world. The aim of the study was to review, for the purpose of documenting the metaphorical usage of Ẹdo verb phrases. The theoretical framework adopted for this investigation was the basic linguistic theory (Dixon 1997) which is a descriptive theoretical framework that employs much of traditional grammar terminologies and borrows from the explanatory theoretical framework like Chomsky’s (1965) version of Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) among others. The data relied on for this project was gotten through interview and close observation of speakers of Ẹdo language. The data was collected by the use of a note pad and a pen. The data from different speakers interviewed was verified and authenticated by other competent speakers of the language in other locations in Benin City to check for presence or absence of dialectal variations. The result of the investigation showed that only transitive verbs are used metaphorically in Ẹdo language because they are the verbs that are capable of taking nominal complements. It also gave a clear cut difference between the metaphorical usage of verb phrases and the idiomatic usage of verb phrases. In conclusion however, the study which is a descriptive study which a semantic analysis of the metaphoricalusage of Ẹdo verb phrases was an attempt to improve on the already gathered knowledge on verbs in the language.
