                                                            ABSTRACT

The Lion and the Jewel  by Wole Soyinka is a symbolically and figuratively complex play. The two primary characters, Sidi, the village beauty, and Baroka, the village Chief, are represented by the title itself. Sidi is the gem, the stunning and appealing female, while Baroka is "the Lion", the strong and cunning male.

In the play, which is set in a traditional Yoruba village, Soyinka explores a variety of issues, such as the conflict between tradition and modernization, the nature of love and marriage, and the place of the individual in the society.

The Lion's representation is one of the play's most remarkable examples of symbolism. Baroka, who is frequently referred to as "the Lion", considers himself to be the village's rightful king. Sidi, who is not afraid to challenge him, puts his authority to test. Baroka's pursuit of Sidi can be interpreted as a metaphor for the desire of the male to possess and rule the female because the Lion is also a symbol of male violence and power.

The Jewel serves as another significant symbol in the play. Sidi is frequently referred to as "the Jewel", and it is true that she is a priceless and attractive woman. She also rejects Lakunle's influence and ultimately makes her own life decisions.

In The Lion and the Jewel,  Soyinkaalso employs a variety of figurative language to create vivid pictures and communicate complex ideas. Figurative language such as personification, metaphors and similes are used.

For  The Lion and the Jewel  to have any significance or impact, symbolism and figurative language are required. Soyinka's use of language is exceptional and significant, and it contributes to the creation of a rich and imaginative world that examines complicated concepts in a way that is thought-provoking.
