ABSTRACT

This study investigates E̩do kinship terminologies, focusing on semantic frames to discern cultural details embedded within the linguistic fabric. The aim of the study include to classify the E̩do kinship terminologies using semantic frames and to examine the structure and organization of the E̩do kinship system. Through a descriptive qualitative research design, primary data is collected via participant observation and oral interviews from proficient native speakers of E̩do. Additionally, secondary sources are consulted for a comprehensive analysis. Utilizing Semantic Frame Theory, the research categorizes and analyzes E̩do kinship terms, unveiling cultural significances and societal structures. Results reveal profound reverence for elders, gender-specific roles,and reverence accorded to elders, as reflected in specific kinship terms. For instance, the term "nọkhua" within the Generational Frame not only denotes familial relationships but also conveys respect and acknowledgment of age and wisdom. This underscores the cultural emphasis placed on hierarchy and seniority within E̩do society and hierarchical family dynamics. Consanguineal terms reflect generational relationships, while affinal terms depict marital connections and extended family ties. Overall, the study illuminates the complexity of familial relationships within E̩do culture, emphasizing blood ties, generational hierarchies, and the integration of families through marriage.
