ABSTRACT
This research is relevance theory analysis of greetings in Edo. The study examined the greetings to account for their structure (how they are formed), the roles do context play in theirinterpretation and the cognitive knowledge that hearers use to come about the intended interpretation The study reveals that Edo greetings has a context which acts as a stimulus and the hearer, has cognitive information’s that allows the them to process the meaning of the greetings. The greetings are used to indexicalize social parameters among interlocutors. More importantly, Edo greetings gives a mental disposition, a cognitive environment which works like a filter for the interpretation and understanding of the stimulus. The greeting in Edo is used to inquire about people’s well-being, the Time of day. There are greetings that are used to show solidarity with someone who is in sorrow and to express joy with someone’s happy moment. Greetings amongst the Edo form part of their socialization process and manifestation of the communicative competence of the people
