ABSTRACT

Literature as an art form recaptures the realities of life and its complexities in any aspect of society it is being represented. Thus, this essay interrogates, critically, the psychological aspect in Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s ‘Season of Crimson Blossoms’. The essay espouses on Cathy Caruth’s and Kali Tal’s Trauma theory using Fruedian Psychoanalysis as an umbrella term which further investigates how the human mind works. It establishes the horrifying and traumatic experiences of the characters in the novel. The study is foregrounded with critical textual analysis and using the qualitative research method. The exploration of how trauma is demonstrated, its causes, effects and consequences within the text is further examined. The essay finds issues of political, social, religious matters as being intertwined with the psychological nature of the novel. The approach examined is through the psychology and traumatisation of the characters. Thus, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim uses his debut novel, ‘Season 9 of Crimson Blossoms’ to demonstrate the trauma of bereavement and abandonment of these characters and how it has greatly affected their lives.
