ABSTRACT
This research on the pragmatic study of Yoruba proverb has attempted to analyze the study of proverb by employing speech act theory as a tool of pragmatic. The research so far has help in passing out knowledge to most especially the younger generation of Yoruba speakers, who does not find it interesting in studying the social cultural value of proverb in a social cultural background. This research has been able to make the younger generation speakers to be able to identify the value of their culture and also appreciating the use of proverbs when used in a social cultural context. It was also discovered that a proverb can be used in different context and also be grouped into different categories such as; a proverb for warning, telling of truth, telling of fact, Advising, promising, Sarcasm, rebuking to mention a few. It has also be proven by some scholars that a proverb must however be examined within a context to ascertain its semantic interpretation and appropriateness. So, therefore, it can be said that proverbial function truly cannot be appropriately determined outside its social cultural context.
