ABSTRACT

This study investigated the pragmatic use of body parts metaphors in the Edo language, focusing on the communicative functions and sociocultural implications of these linguistic expressions. Drawing on a sample of native Edo speakers, the study employed oral data and qualitative research methods to explore the usage of body parts metaphors in everyday discourse within the Edo-speaking community. Through a combination of observational data and interviews with participants, the study analyzed the pragmatic and contextual meanings associated with body parts metaphors, shedding light on their role in interpersonal communication, social interactions, and cultural expression. The data collected were analyzed based on the contextual references. The findings highlighted that the contextual references embedded in body parts metaphors included warnings, greatness, outstanding feats, among others. These multifaceted nature of body parts metaphors in Edo, revealed their influence on speech acts, politeness strategies, and the negotiation of social relationships. The study concluded that the into the contextual embeddedness within these body metaphors have implications for a deeper understanding of the pragmatic and sociolinguistic dimensions of body parts metaphors in the Edo language, which provides valuable implications for cross-cultural communication and linguistic diversity.
