ABSTRACT
This research work gave a pragmatic evaluation of the contextual meanings/figurative devices that are embedded and employed in poems, it explores the general terms used by poets especially using the poems in Edo. The basic aim of this study is to provide an understanding towards the pragmatic aspect of the Edo poems using the speech act which aims to examine the use of language in the literary forms in order to understand their intended meaning, how they are used to convey emotions and experience and how they function within the Edo culture and society. The data for this study were obtained from poems and the data collected was pragmatically evaluated and the messages decoded from the perspective of the speaker’s intention and listeners’ reaction. The pragmatic evaluation of these Edo poems revealed that these poems function as a means of preserving the Edo language and culture. The poems not only communicate messages, but also provide a window into the worldview and values of the Edo people
