Abstract

This work examines the pragmatic approach to slangs in Nigerian Pidgin. This study however intends to investigate how various slangs are used in different context. Data for this study was gathered through the use of both the quantitative and qualitative research methodology, as the researcher listened to wide range of speeches in the Nigerian Pidgin. To achieve the aim of this study, the researcher used the tenets of the Speech Act theory as the theoretical approach. From the study it is revealed that pidgin are used to pass across highly discreet messages, and meaning of a slang can be lost when used out of context. Slangs in the Nigerian Pidgin is used across all parts of the country where the pidgin language is found, since the use of words can change, slangs will keep emerging in languages including the Nigerian Pidgin. The researcher however recommends that further studies on pidgin be carried out  on the various registers used in the Nigerian Pidgin, and pidgin as a panacea for the ethic disunity in Nigeria.
