Yoruba society, known for its emphasis on respect and social hierarchy, intricately weaves these values into its language. Honorific names serve as a key example, functioning beyond mere identification. This research delves into a pragmatic analysis of Yoruba honorific names, exploring how they operate within communication. The study will examine the diverse forms of honorific names used in Yoruba, analysing how they are used with different sectors of within the Yoruba speech community. The analysis will dissect how these names, when used within different interactions convey deference, politeness, and the complex web of social relationships between speakers and addressees. Furthermore, this research will delve into the rich cultural context that informs the selection and use of honorific names. It will investigate the underlying pragmatic principles that govern this intricate language practice. By examining the pragmatic functions of honorific names, this research aims to contribute significantly to a deeper understanding of how language acts as a cornerstone in maintaining social order and fostering respect within Yoruba culture.
