ABSTRACT

The study is a pragmatic analysis of taboo constructions and euphemism in Mbaise dialect of Igbo language. It examines the euphemisms used in place of taboo construction. It also identifies the socio cultural context in which euphemisms can be used appropriately in the Mbaise dialect.

Data for this study was gotten from a variety of sources, including several settings in which the native speakers use the Mbaise dialect freely as well as published works done in the Igbo language and some other languages of the world. Taboo has existed for a long time in the world and it is developing and changing as time goes by. In terms of language, taboo relates to both taboo words and taboo topics. Context is an indispensable factor when we analyse all language phenomena. The framework for the study was based on the ETHNOGRAPHY OF COMMUNICATION of DELL HYMES, which has a direct relatedness in the area of taboo and euphemism. From the study, it was observed that there are more euphemistic expressions than taboo constructions in the Mbaise dialect because most of these euphemisms have been instilled from childhood to the extent that the native speakers cannot remember the taboo word.
