ABSTRACT
This study is sets out to examine the euphemistic expressions use in the place of taboo words and expressions. It identifies the socio- cultural context in which euphemistic words and expressions can be use appropriately in Edo language community. The data use in the study was collected by recording utterances, through interviews of Edo native speakers. Five categories of Edo taboos and euphemistic expressions were discussed and analyse, using Speech Acts Theories of J.L Austin and the Ethnography of Communication of H.D Hymes, as the adopted theoretical frameworks while some palace convention taboos and disease related ones don’t have permissible alternative because they are related to different deities, while sex, moral and social taboos have permissible alternatives, some Edo language taboos have features or characteristics of proverbs, adage and idioms.
