Summary
The goal of this research work is to analyze pragmatically the use of symbolization in Igbo proverbs. Proverbs are a rich and linguistic heritage for any people. The Igbo people are not any different. Proverbs, in fact, for them, is a way of life and that is why it is described as “mmanu ndi Igbo ji eri okwu” (the oil with which Igbos garnish words). Any conversation, argument or deliberation that is not garnished with sufficient dose of proverbs lacks the persuasive aesthetic force and the peculiar tint that recommends the uniqueness of Igbo language.
This research work is organized in four chapters. Chapter one is the introductory part, detailing what the research is all about, what motivated the work, how the work is organized, definition of important terms used in the work, aims and objectives of the work, research questions, methods of data collection, method of data analysis and theoretical framework.
