ABSTRACT
Previous research on slang use in hip-hop lyrics have always focused on the form and structure of the slangs. There has been no attempt to describe the content or substance of these slangs. Therefore, this work aims to describe the substance and content of slang use in selected Nigerian hip-hop lyrics.
The theoretical framework of this research used in this work is the descriptive framework as amplified in the work of Leonard Bloomfield and others was employed in this work. The intended technique of analysis will involve a short general description of the songs, one after the other and identification of slang expressions found in them. Then a detailed pragmatic analysis of these slang expression will be done using context, presupposition, reference intention and illocutionary act.
Finally, in this work we find out that substance and content of hip-hop lyrics includes

a. Hip-hop singers usually take for granted certain factors about the totality of the target listeners. And also find out that Nigerian hip-hop artist talks about money, women, and sex.
b. I also, find out that hip-hop music is in no way an art for art sake that is meant just for aesthetics alone.
c. No hip-hop singer chooses slang forms, arbitrarily and also slangs are not inevitable in Nigerian hip-hop Lyrics.
In conclusion, slangs in Nigerian hip-hop lyrics have substance and content and functions to make clearer the message in the music.
