ABSTRACT
This research work is a pragmatic analysis of proverbs in Ilaje. The purpose of the study is to identify. interpret and document the proverbs in Ilaje. The motivation of the study was as a result to the love for the Ilaje and to further increase, the documentation on the Ilaje language as a way of preserving the culture, knowledge, value and belief of the people. The method of data collection was by the means of interviewing native speakers of the language. The Speech Act theory as proposed by J.L Austin was employed. The study observed that Ilaje`s proverbs employ various linguistic devices such as figurative depictions, metaphorical language and imagery. It is therefore recommended that more studies be carried out on the other aspects of the language.
