ABSTRACT

This project is based on a pragmatic analysis of pidgin proverbs. Its aim is to examine how a particular proverb can be used in a particular situation or context because proverbs are only used when the situation warrants it. Method of data collection was the primary and secondary, but for data presentation and analysis, the data used was from the primary source. The method used in this study for data collection is the participant observation method with the use of paper and pen. The theoretical framework adopted for this research is the speech Acts Theory proposed by J.L Austin (1962) and Searle (1969), the data was analyzed using the locutionary act, illocutionary act and the perlocutionary act. In this research, we found out the Nigerian Pidgin Proverb can serve different purpose; advice, encouragement and caution also, we found out that the perlocution which is the effect of a word on an individual is not always as we Predict it to be. In conclusion, this study has shown how proverb are used in the Nigeria pidgin to give advice, correct bad behaviours and also be used as a words of encouragement to someone.
