ABSTRACT
Ikpeshi is a Proto-North West Edoid language, it is one of the languages used in Edo State, South-South Nigeria. It has a similar linguistic features with Edo (Bini). This study is an investigation into the phonology of Ikpeshi language with the view to determine the sound system of the language, phonological processes like vowel elision, vowel assimilation glide formation, nasalization; syllable and tonal patterns operational the language. The methodology employed in this work is descriptive. The theoretical framework was Goldsmith Autosegmental theory. The basis of our analysis for this study were data gathered from a variety of sources, including the primary and secondary sources. In this research, the collection of data was majorly done using the Ibadan 400 word list of basic lexical items from competent native speakers of Ikpeshi language with audio tape recorded and transcribed phonetically. Materials were sourced from published and unpublished materials including textbooks, journals and articles. These served as secondary sources of data collection.
