ABSTRACT

This essay examines Amartya Sen’s capability theory as a cornerstone in contemporary development economics and ethics. It does so in relation to motions such as humanism, feminism and flourishing state. In all the aforementioned, the underlying principle is the promotion of the individual as the variable for transforming the society. Thus, if a society wants to experience development, the individuals should be empowered. This essay dwells substantially on Sen’s propositions that: the freedom of an individual in a society is paramount and an indispensable variable for development. Such freedom gives the individual the option of choices and vast opportunities regardless of who they are. Also, opportunities, whether economical or political guarantee and protect the development of the society. This essay further exposes the myriads of problems bedeviling Nigeria and discusses Sen’s capability theory as a framework for plausible solutions. To achieve the goal of this study, I adopt the method of critical analysis. I conclude that the capability theory of Sen is capable of addressing several injustices in Nigeria such as those related to individuals with disabilities and in poverty among others.
