ABSTRACT

This study aims to conduct a comprehensive morpho-semantic analysis of af ixes intheYoruba language. By examining the structure and meaning of af ixes within the linguisticframework of Yoruba, this research seeks to contribute to a deeper understandingof themorphological and semantic aspects of this West African language. The Yoruba language, spoken predominantly in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa, is rich in morphologyandsemantics. However, there is a lack of detailed studies focusing on the morpho-semanticproperties of af ixes in Yoruba. This research addresses this gap by providing insights intothe intricate relationships between morphological structures and semantic meanings intheYoruba linguistic system. The study employs a theoretical framework groundedinmorphology and semantics, drawing on concepts from linguistic theories such as morphemeanalysis, semantic compositionality, and lexical semantics. By integrating these theoretical perspectives, the research aims to of er a holistic understanding of af ixation processes intheYoruba language. The population under investigation consists of native Yoruba speakers, aswell as scholars and linguists specializing in African languages. The study focuses onbothoral and written sources of the Yoruba language, including literature, folklore, and everydaydiscourse, to capture a diverse range of linguistic data. Data for this study are collectedthrough a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Techniques include corpusanalysis, morphological segmentation, semantic categorization, and native speakerconsultations. The research also utilizes linguistic databases and literature sources togathercomprehensive data on Yoruba af ixation patterns. The analysis reveals intricate morpho-semantic patterns in Yoruba af ixes, shedding light on the structural organizationandsemantic nuances of af ixation processes. The study identifies productive af ixation strategies, semantic shifts, and patterns of af ixal variation across dif erent lexical categories inYoruba. Additionally, the research highlights the role of cultural and historical factors in shapingmorpho-semantic phenomena in the language. In conclusion, this study provides valuableinsights into the morpho-semantic analysis of af ixes in the Yoruba language. By elucidatingthe complex interplay between morphology and semantics, the research contributes toadeeper understanding of linguistic structures and processes in Yoruba, with implications forlanguage documentation, education, and further research in African linguistics.
