ABSTRACT

The morpho-semantic analysis of Edo person names was done in order to show the Edo normal and values as expressed in their naming patterns. A sample of more than 60 names for both males and females were used for the presentation and analysis. The data were collected from native speaker of Benin in Edo State. These data show the circumstance surrounding the child birth and were analyses using morphological and semantic analysis. Basic linguistic theory was used as a guide to this analysis by describing and explaining these data. Edo personal names reflect the attitude surrounding the name giver before, during and after the time of birth the name bearer and the result of these analyses revealed that Edo personal names have meaning and these meaning are identified based on how they are reflected in the culture of the Edo society.

In Edo, the bound morphemes that are attached to free morphemes have their different meaning depending on the context of the structure of sentences or words. Edo personal names needs attention in the semantics and morphological aspects to linguists and student of linguistics as well as the native speaker of the dialect and the language at large, it will serve as a reference material to researcher and should be reserved as a marker for culture and tradition.
