ABSTRACT

The study examined the morphophonemics of the –lv and –rv suffixes in Ẹdo. The focus of the study was not to discuss the morphological properties of the suffixes. It explained the phonological features that guide the allomorphs of the –lv and –rv suffixes. The reason for the study rests on the fact that there is no phonological explanation available in the many literatures on the language for the realization of the allomorphs of the suffixes under study.

The study relied on the principles of the basic linguistic theory which served as the framework for the study to explain the morphophonemics of the linguistic data collected. The data relied on were primary data collected orally from competent speakers of the language using the observation and interview methods. The instrument used for collecting the data comprised analogue and digital equipment, i.e., writing materials and a voice recorder.

The study found out that the –lv suffix arch morpheme is –lo which is phonological conditioned the mid vowels. Furthermore the study confirmed the claims in Ọmọruyi (1986) and (1990) that –re is the arch morpheme of the past tense suffix in Ẹdo. The study also revealed that the –rv suffix is only conditioned by the tensed vowels in Ẹdo. The study was concluded with the notion that the –lv and –rv suffixes in Ẹdo would present interesting results for linguistic typology if the morphomorphemics, morphosyntactics, morphosemantics and morphopragmatics of the suffixes are examined.
