ABSTRACT

This project work is a morpho-phonemic analysis of borrowed words in Isoko. Borrowing is a common phenomenon amongst languages of the world. The study discussed in detail, the phenomenon of borrowing in Isoko, one of the Edoid languages spoken by the Isoko people of southern Nigeria. The project began with an overview of the Isoko language, it then delved into the phonological and morphological changes that occur as Isoko incorporates words from other languages. By examining the adaptations that borrowed words undergo, this project contributes to a deeper understanding of language evolution, contact-induced changes, and the linguistic dynamics present within Isoko.  The lang in contact framework was used, an oral interview of native speakers was carried out in other to gather data for this research work. A list of borrowed words were collected and analysis was conducted. From the study, we found out that majority of the borrowed words came from English. Other donor languages included Hausa, Igbo and Youruba. Further findings revealed that there were two prominent loan strategies in the language which are naturalized borrowing and loan translations.
