ABSTRACT

In a democratic society, citizens affirm different moral and religious doctrines. When faced with issues as important as euthanasia, we approach it from our own moral and religious standpoint. some believe strongly in the sanctity and sacredness of human life, others believe in a moral responsibility to put an end to unnecessary suffering. This fact of pluralism is an unchanging feature of contemporary social life. We are unlikely to agree on a single philosophy, religion ,so long as we are free and live in a free society.

On the other hand, there is a conflict of duties on the side of the physician. Any acts on the side of the physician could either make or break him or her. It is very easy for one to quote the guidelines in medical books and also the law, but it is an entirely different matter when one is faced with such dicey situation. As such, one needs not rely only on the letter of the law but on the spirit of the law.

Ethical knowledge requires participation in concrete experiences, thus, like Aristotle, our ethics and decisions should be guided by our values and ideals which are based on concrete experiences.
