ABSTRACT

This essay examines president Bola Ahmed Tinubu's presidential speeches, from the day he was declared President-Elect of Nigeria and received the certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The purpose of this essay is to analyze the foregrouded elements employed by Tinubu in his presidential speeches using the theoritical framework of the theory of foregrounding, which examines styles as deviation from the norm. Focusing on deviations and parrallelisms, it demonstrates how Tinubu's lexical choices, grammatical structures, and the use of rhetorical devices help foregrounds his messages and ideas. The essay reveals that President Tinubu effectively use Foregrounding to inform, persuade, and influence his audience, the Nigerian people. Foregrounding helps draw attention, create emphasis, and convey messages in a more engaging and memorable manner. Tinubu employs foregrounding to promote unity and national collaboration, convey messages of hope and democratic values, and relay ideaologies of employment, national progress and development. The study concluded that the use of foregrounding by Tinubu does not only help foregrounds his messages but also emphasize the importance of his message, promoting national growth and prosperity while calling for unity and harmony among Nigerians. This portrays Tinubu as an informative, persuasive, influential, and convincing leader who is committed to the betterment of his people.
