ABSTRACT

This research examines the colour terminology in the Igbo language, utilizing Berlin and Kay's Basic Colour Terms theory as a framework for analysing how colours are categorized and named within the Igbo linguistic system. By employing a comparative approach to investigate the alignment or divergence of Igbo colour terms with the universal patterns proposed by Berlin and Kay, the research aims to offer insights into the perceptions and categorization of colours by Igbo speakers. This study contributes to a more profound comprehension of the cognitive and cultural influences on colour perception within Igbo society, enriching our understanding of language structure and cognition in the Igbo linguistic community. The nature of the data collected includes descriptions related to the use and perception of colour terms in the Igbo language, it consists of observation, interviews and existing literature on colour perception in Igbo language. Ultimately, the project served as a valuable exploration of the intricate world of color terminology in the Igbo language, shedding light on the complex interplay between language, culture, and perception.
