ABSTRACT

The term "federalism" is used to describe a system of the government in which sovereignty is constitutionally divided between a central governing authority and constituent political units (like states or provinces). This research work examines the practice of federalism in Nigeria with a view to examining the performance, challenges and the prospects –as the only basis upon which Nigeria can remain united. Despite its attendant’s challenges of diversity and peculiar conditions in which the different tribal groups live, there exists some ray of hope for Nigeria’s federalism. However, the greatest problem of federalism in Nigeria today is the general problems of the true nature of the federal relationship as manifested in the intense rivalry coupled with constitutional ambiguities and conflict of interest between the Federal, State Governments. The study concludes by recommending a call for the restructuring of federalism in Nigeria under the 1999 Constitution (as amended) should be implemented and federalism demands of them co-operation with one another in order to promote the welfare of the people through their combined powers.
