ABSTRACT
The entire issue of child marriage has been hinged on several factors which have not ceased to cause irreparable damage wherever it is found. Child marriage is a global issue, and is one of the many issues that have drawn the attention of the United Nations to Nigeria aside from other issues like insecurity. It is a violation of human right and has become an issue of concern in many jurisdictions and Nigeria is not left out in this quagmire.
The fact that while we move forward, religion seems to affect how our laws play out has made the outcome of the laws very unhealthy for the societies that it affects. Child marriage has become one of those issues that Religion affects in several geographical areas in Nigeria and despite the ills and baggage that come with it. These areas have paid total allegiance to stick to them just because it is an integral part of their religion.
One may ask, “What role exactly do the enactment of laws have to play especially in Nigeria in curbing and bringing this menace to an end?” This question may have been attempted by several writers but at no point have there been a lasting solution to the issue of discourse. However, the attempts will continuously be made until we find the exact thing we all have been looking for where we can say that we have successfully come to realization of the correct answer.
What this work seeks to address is that the law pretends to have provisions that corrects this problematic issue but however, these laws have also been contradicted by the provisions of other laws in the same country. Therefore, the major point of focus will be how to reconcile the conflicting laws on child marriage in Nigeria.
How then can a country thrive with different and conflicting positions of the law addressing one issue when no uniformity can be achieved in them thereby causing each jurisdiction to choose which of the laws that favour their indiscretions?
This work seeks to proffer a solution that can serve as a correctional guide to the issue of Child marriage in Nigeria.
