ABSTRACT
This study has explored the history of Charilove located in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, from its period of establishment in 1990 to the present time period of 2023. Orphanages, originating from ancient times, have a long history, dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with religious institutions and wealthy families providing care. The rise in disability awareness and societal stigmas led to the establishment of separate institutions for children with special needs.Orphanages and institutions for children with special needs persist globally, including Nigeria, despite efforts to transition to family-based care and community inclusion.1
