SUMMARY
This study has shown how language is used to demean and marginalize women. It has shown that the English Language is sexist. The sexist nature of the English language is due to sexism in society. Women are supposed to stay at home, remaining powerless, and are expected to become subordinate and submissive to a man, whereas, men are considered as powerful and are to be respected and honoured both in the family and society. The phrases, ‘weaker sex’, ‘cheap chop’, ‘market mummies’, ‘street girl’, ‘hi life’ and other lexical items such as, ‘witch’, ‘green’, ‘property’, ‘bundle’ and ‘chicken’ which are used to describe female characters in the novels demean them. It portrays them as sexual object to be devoured. Also, from our analysis, we see how these negative words and phrases are readily available for female characters unlike the male characters who rather than acquire negative words, have expressions such as ‘lord’ and ‘master’ which boost their ego.
