ABSTRACT
This project examines the discourse analysis on code switching and code mixing among female students in Tinubu Hostel in the University of Benin. The study falls within the linguistic field of sociolinguistic and account for code switching and mixing of English and Pidgin language. The focus of this study is set to evaluate the aspect of language and communication in a multilingual society with emphasis on code switching and code mixing among female UNIBEN students in Tinubu Hostel. An important motivation for the researchers is to investigate the dynamics of bilingual behavior in a natural setting. The data used was collected from both primary and secondary sources which include written, audio and video recordings, participant observation and direct oral interview, the qualitative research design was employed here. The conversational theoretical framework was adopted for the present study, in this the context of usage, manner of conversation and use of words of each conversations are deduced. This study is beneficial to bilinguals and the society at large and also contributes to additional knowledge in the field of sociolinguistics and it will be also very useful for English and Linguistics students as it dwells on language in a natural setting.
