A DIRECTOR’S EXCURSION BEYOND THE SCRIPT

ABSTRACT

Theatre captures the essence of life through diverse performative expressions, showcasing the beauty of humanity's most remarkable moments. Artists and theatre designers utilize their creative, imaginative, intellectual, and inspirational abilities to create captivating experiences. The theatre director plays a vital role in orchestrating and organizing the entire mise-en-scene, contributing to the intellectual and artistic depth of the production. Based on the researcher's assessment, the study aimed to comprehensively acknowledge the director's complete range of functions, roles, and undeniable intellectual and artistic impact on the success of a theatrical production. The study utilized an experimental methodology by employing John Bardi's play "The Fall of Agamebu" as a case study. This involved exploring innovative approaches and techniques throughout the entire theatrical process, including pre-production, production, and post-production. The analysis focused on examining the entirety of the process and the director's integral role in shaping the work.  The research findings revealed the diverse directing approaches and emphasized the importance of recognizing the pivotal role of the director in theatrical production. The director serves as the keystone, orchestrating all elements and ensuring their proper placement. The success or failure of the production ultimately hinges on the director's abilities and decisions. The researcher recommended that it would be beneficial to offer additional resources that can enhance the assessment of the theatre director's role and also provide training for student directors to familiarize them with different approaches, fundamental functions, and the significance of the theatre director's role. This would enable a better understanding of the role and its impact.
