ABSTRACT

The study examined the descriptive analysis of colours in Edo Language. It took a typological look at the names of the colours in the language. It also looked at the lexical class and the colours that come about by ideophones.

Data for this study were gathered from a variety of sources, including interacting with Edo speakers about the colours in the language as well as published works in the language. The method of analysis adopted for this study was based on descriptive linguistics which attempts to describe a language in its own terms rather than trying to force language into a model based on another language.

The study found out that the Edo colours belong to the lexical class of Adjective. Some colours were also seen to be classified into verbs. It was also seen that the ideophonic colours had same meaning.
