ABSTRACT
This research examines the efforts that have been made by the Nigerian government to combat corruption in Nigeria. It looks at the emergence of corruption from the colonial era through to the period of independence which brought about civilian and military regimes at different times. The research also examines the strategies that have been employed by the government to fight the menace of corruption. In a bid to fight corruption, the government has established anti-corruption agencies to achieve its aim. This research outlines the anti-corruption agencies that presently exist in Nigeria, but primarily focuses on the EFCC and ICPC. The research examines the effectiveness and otherwise of the existing institutions and finds that there are numerous challenges facing them. Based on the findings this research recommends the establishment of special courts for the prosecution of cases relating to corruption, the equal treatment of those in government and ordinary citizens in matters of corruption, and anti-corruption agencies should be properly funded in other to aid the agencies to carry out their mandate effectively, and concludes that until there is an honest interest by the government to end corruption, the evil would continue to exist in every aspect of the country’s existence.
