ABSTRACT

The family can be regarded as society’s oldest and most important institutions. Man’s inability to exist independent of other men is what instigated society. Family is regarded as the first agent of socialization and the smallest unit of the society; it is in this unit that the values of the individuals are sharpened. However, this relationship is bound to have some misunderstanding, which may include violence. Violence in the family is an essentially nauseating phenomenon, its effects extend far beyond the individual and the immediate environment, it reflects in the society and consequently interrupts the achievement of a successful society. This work employs the critical analysis method. It analyses the concept of domestic violence in relation to the Yoruba culture, and then proceeds to advance a critique for domestic violence. It is deduced from this research that although the Yoruba culture intends to abhor violence, their traditional values indeed fuel these occurrences. Domestic violence should be frowned at, and everyone is expected to contribute his or her little ration to curbing this evil.
