ABSTRACT
"This essay critically evaluates the moral values implicit in traditional Esan proverbs, a cultural expression of the Edo people of Nigeria. It examines how these proverbs reflect and reinforce core ethical principles such as respect for elders, community harmony, and honesty. It further argues that Esan proverbs embody a rich tradition of moral education, transmitting ethical values from one generation to the next. However, this essay also notes that some of these proverbs contain problematic stereotypes and patriarchal assumptions, and that their relevance may be challenged in a modern, globalized world.
