ABSTRACT

The era of the debate on the legitimacy of African philosophy has been swept under the carpet through the efforts of great African scholars of which Odera Oruka stands out, hence this work is an attempt to interpret Odera Oruka’s some of philosophical ideas. Odera Oruka dealt with some important issues in our society such as human equality, human dignity, justice, e.tc. Basically, Oruka’s philosophy majorly deals with the required minimum for a person to live a worthy life, a dignified life that accords a person capacity to exercise rationality as a moral agent. In his bid to prove that African were indeed moral agents and worthy of comparison with philosophers in the pre-Socratic era, Oruka went to the villages of Kenya and met with sages with whom he had conversation and tested their wisdom via oral philosophy (this is where the word ‘philosophical sagacity’ was coined from). Through this thesis, we will see how Oruka’s thoughts are still relevant in our present day society.
