SUMMARY
Jesus’ parable of the talents is a critical discourse in the body of Christ today that relates some levels of implicit meanings which has been revealed through the deployment of Critical Discourse Analysis. The parable of the talents on a religious level has always emphasized on the kingdom of heaven as a place where spiritual gifts (with the use of ‘talents as a scriptural representation) are given only to those who by virtue of salvation are members of the kingdom. Also, from a religious standpoint, it has always emphasized on the need for everyone who is a part of the kingdom to effectively use the gifts that has been given to them. However, every religious explanation given to the parable of the talents is rather narrow in scope as the parable conveys more meanings, which with the help of Critical Discourse Analysis has been exposed. According to Teun van Djik, critical discourse analysis “is a field that is concerned with studying and analyzing written and spoken texts to reveal the discursive source of power, dominance, ideology and inequality. It examine how these discursive sources are maintained and reproduced within specific social, political, and historical context” (45).
