Abstract

This study aims to provide a fresh re-interpretation of Aquinas's natural law theory, exploring its relevance and applicability in contemporary society. By critically examining Aquinas's original texts and engaging with modern scholarship, this study seeks to shed new light on key aspects of his theory while addressing its potential limitations and addressing contemporary critiques. The study begins by establishing a comprehensive understanding of Aquinas's natural law theory, focusing on its central principles such as the teleological orientation towards human flourishing, the primacy of reason, and the notion of eternal law as the divine foundation. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives, the study then examines how Aquinas's theory can be re-contextualized in light of current societal challenges and ethical debates. This research also delves into the complexities surrounding the application of Aquinas's natural law theory in the modern world. It analyzes the dynamic relationship between natural law and positive law, exploring potential areas of harmony and tension. Moreover, the study investigates the role of conscience and the individual's moral agency within Aquinas's framework, emphasizing the importance of discernment and the potential for moral growth.
