ABSTRACT
The abuse of human rights is a normal occurrence perpetrated by Nigerian Security agents. This research examines human rights violations by security agencies in Nigeria. Provable incidences of extra judicial killings, brutality of innocent citizens, use of force to elicit confessional statements from suspects, blatant corruption continues to be a characteristic of Nigerian security agents. The research discusses the extent and nature of human rights violations in Nigeria and the impediments to the realization of human rights in Nigeria. It was shown that there is a lack of proper conduct in the Nigerian security agencies especially the police. The research shows that human rights abuse have been caused by a lot of factors such as poor training, corruption, poor leadership, insincerity of law enforcement agents, under management of vital information, lack of advocacy, lack of diligent prosecution of violators, orientation, and lack of equipment, illiteracy and ignorance of citizens in protecting their rights, etc. Therefore, this research recommends that the security agents should be given adequate training, and there should be a compulsory inclusion of human rights education in the curriculum of all police colleges and military training institutions. Violators should be diligently prosecuted to act as a deterrent to others. Legal aid should be made accessible to the poor who are being violated, and more Human Rights Organizations should come up and volunteer to assist the poor in fighting for their rights.
