A CRITICAL ANALYSIS ON THE RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION: A CASE STUDY OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA

ABSTRACT

This research examines the right of self-determination using “Biafra” as a power or ability to make decision for oneself without influence from outside. The right of a nation or people to determine its own form of government without influence from outside. Recently, in Nigeria Biafra which is not novel to US flared up from the Eastern part of Nigeria (Igbo community) lead by Nnamdi Kanu expressed its desire to own their own State and be separate from Nigeria. They alleged that they have a right to self-determination. These has caused a lot of chaos, debates and hiccups in the country. This work would examine the right to self-determination, the origin of Biafra, reasons why the indigenous people of Biafra started seeking for self-determination and the legal frame work on the right to self-determination this work also proffer recommendations to the study. Finally, this work concludes that there should be progress towards constitutional, administrative and policy reforms that would respond to the demand of the South East, the agitation could escalate.
