ABSTRACT

Scholars of African theatre have at different times and different levels attempted uncovering the indigenization technique in African theatre especially from the influence of colonialism to its indigenous people. In the process of venturing into this study, it has been discovered over time, that the most important factor (amongst others) to be considered in the indigenization and modelling of African theatre is pertinent to the people of Africa and their Culture. Culture is the way of life of a people living together in a particular geographical area, sharing similar beliefs, norms, traditions and ideology.

Africa which happens to be built and preserved on communal efforts thrives vehemently on the collective efforts of it people to get things done. That is why for the purpose of exploring or defining a chasis for African theatre, we shall be taking a critical look at Sam Ukalaand his Folkic ideologyas case study. The validity of this ideology will be appreciated in the course of this study. The techniques he has used in defining a structural identity under this study will be carefully examined for the purpose of clarity on the subject matter.

The first chapter will form the basis of an introduction, ushering us into the literature review of chapter two where we shall be taking a critical look at the subject matter properly. A critical analysis of Sam Ukala’s concept of Folkism and the indigenization technique employed will form the basis of our discussion in chapter three and four respectively. While chapter five concludes this project work with recommendation.
