ABSTRACT
Election laws play a crucial role in a democratic system because they have a significant impact on how elections are conducted. These laws are necessary to guarantee that the electoral process in Nigeria reflects the will of the people. Despite this, there are substantial issues that undermine the efficiency of the electoral process in Nigeria. The credibility of the Nigerian electoral system has been severely compromised by issues such as electoral misconduct, result manipulation, insecurity, bribery and corruption in the electoral system. This essay aims to examine the impact of election laws in Nigeria. It will analyze the challenges associated with holding elections, and the measures taken to ensure fairness and transparency in Nigerian elections. Additionally, it aims to assess the effectiveness of the current legal and institutional framework governing elections in Nigeria, paying close attention to the just concluded 2023 presidential election. The presidential election of 2023 was a significant evaluation for election laws in Nigeria, this essay finds that the laws did not adequately address some of the key challenges that arose during the election. The credibility of the Nigerian electoral system has been seriously damaged by the existence of election fraud, corruption, bribery as well as shortcomings by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) such as logistic problems and insecurity. It is therefore essential to review and update current election laws in order to address these gaps and inconsistencies. Similarly, it is necessary to prioritize transparency and integrity within the institutional framework of the electoral system. Furthermore, initiatives should be put in place to improve the efficiency of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in organizing elections. This essay advocates that election integrity can be preserved through the implementation of measures to prevent electoral fraud.
